What is seakale?
Seakale, or Crambe Maritima, is a plant that has always grown in the wild, for example on pebbly beaches along the coasts of France, Great Britain and Denmark. Wild seakale is found in the Netherlands on such places as the Afsluitdijk (Closure Dike). The wild plant is protected. Seakale has large green decorative leaves. The plant blossoms early in the summer, with white honey-sweet smelling flowers. Young shoots or stalks are ‘pulled’ off of the stems of the seakale plants in the dark. It’s these unusual and extremely tasty stalks that we eat.
An exclusive vegetable Previously, the availability of seakale stalks in the spring was sometimes limited. That is why a few quality restaurants could offer seakale as an exclusive seasonal product on the menu. But now seakale will be available on a larger scale.
