Soil salination of land
Cultivating seakale on Texel is not an isolated process. Bringing seakale onto the market for consumption is part of various research project taking place on Texel at the moment. In these projects, opportunities for cultivating crops in salt-tolerant soils is being studied.
The idea lying behind this cultivation is that the Netherlands, as well as other regions in the world, must prepare itself for increasing land salination. In the Netherlands alone, around 150,000 hectare land is being threatened by salination. Worldwide, we are talking about 1.5 billion hectares of land. The studies taking place at the moment on Texel assume that land salination can offer new chances. Which crops grow well in saline soils and how can we exploit these crops? The fact that we can now bring seakale to the market is a good sign. It creates expectations for new and unusual crops in the future.
