Sea kale, now exclusively on the market

Since 2008, the ‘new’ vegetable seakale is available in the Netherlands. This exclusive vegetable is sold in the winter and spring via two large wholesalers. Up till now, seakale was only cultivated privately, or harvested in the wild. The Saint Donatus Foundation on Texel has succeeded in making the vegetable suitable for professional cultivation.

Where is seakale cultivated?
This is the first time that seakale is being cultivated on a professional basis and sold on the market. Momentarily, it is only being grown on Texel. The Saint Donatus Foundation has converted a traditional sheep shed (‘schapenboet’) close to the village of Den Hoorn especially for this crop. No chemical pesticides are used in growing this seakale.
